2026 Exhibition: Before the Wind

Craven Allen Gallery, Durham, NC

The multi-form exhibition and video were generated during two months in Australia, including a residency at the Bilpin international Grounds for Creative initiatives. The project includes 21 physical pictures and video with dissolving images, text and sound and builds on several past projects exploring sites that experienced climate-impacted wildfire (previous exhibitions focused on Sequoia NP, the Klamath Mountains, and eastern NC).

Former North Carolina Museum of Art director Larry Wheeler commented: Each [picture] is brilliant in its own way…Dan finds an energy in nature that I think a few artists today do and he can make you feel it. That's the powerful thing about his work [and why] I think they're important works of art. I think they represent a fulfillment of who Dan is. I mean there's cosmic energy here. There's metaphysical energy here. There are all sorts of ways to read the soul into these pictures, and Dan has, I think, captured it.

Images below are relatively muted - compared with the physical pictures I make in a laborious in-studio layered process that creates depth, movement, and energy. They are constructed - in reverse - with UV printing, acrylic paint, and surface sanding and polishing.
